MLANJENI MAGICAL THEATER is a theater for children ages 2 - 6. Using stories, magical illusions, puppets, folk music and dance young audiences participate in a form of east African storytelling theater which director Mlanjeni calls "Muungamano."
Beginning in the Delaware Valley in 1990 the Mlanjeni Magical Theater has toured 6 "little plays for little people" annually in day care homes, day care centers, kindergartens, charter schools, and libraries. The plays focus on seasons, manners, friendship, play, science, jobs people do, safety and people in history. There are 30 minute plays for toddlers, and 45 minute plays for pre-school, kindergarten and first graders. The plays include characters from east African stories in modern situations such as rabbit and turtle learning about friendship, heroes such as Mwamba and Shamba learning lessons on manners, or dragon Ijangayanga learning about holiday seasons.
Acclaimed as a cross between Dr. Suess, Alex Haley and the Pied Piper the Mlanjeni Magical Theater transports the audience to other lands and times. The results are smiles, laughter, and interactive fun with the puppets. The Mlanjeni Magical Theater has performed and is part of various Museum-on-the-Go programs in the area, and has performed at the Please Touch Museum, the African-American Museum of Philadelphia, the Delaware County Library System, the Philadelphia Free Library, various Head Start programs and Bright Future programs.
The Mlanjeni Magical Theater tours all areas within the Delaware Valley. The requirements for a performance are very simple...2 chairs for the performers. Everything else is provided by the theater. The fees for the performances are very reasonable and affordable for the smallest to the largest centers.
